Kealanani is an integrated agricultural/residential community
planned to involve homeowners in their choice of agricultural activities,
primarily focused on (but not exclusive to) a tea plantation, a
taro farm, and the cultivation of tropical fruit trees, with an
emphasis on cacao. While these three primary agricultural activities
will establish the identity and focus of Kealanani, owners will
be able to make their own decisions regarding their individual agricultural
activities.
Permanent incentives will be provided to all property owners to
engage in agriculture. Extensive waterways exist on the property
from several nearby and on site reservoirs developed by Makee sugar
plantations during the late 1800s. Thus, irrigation water will be
provided to each individual lot. In addition, assistance in tea,
taro or cacao production will be made available, as well as exposure
to the local and tourist markets through roadside stands and farmers'
markets.
All Kealanani owners will have the means to generate income from
agricultural activities. Small-scale, niche agri-businesses which
achieve high quality can direct their marketing to specialty outlets,
including the future onsite Kealanani Tea House and the adjacent
Kealia Store, as well as the international market through the internet.
